Your copy of
Vexar Entertainment's Wednesday Nights in
Memphis is waiting for you at Spin Street Records in Memphis. Stop
by and pick up a copy to benefit the good work at Target House.
Lately David has an unplugged performance at the store at 3pm on June 16th
to help promote the record, we'd love for you to stop by and celebrate
with this awesome recording with us.
4/5/07 So,
the D's been underground for a while. Danny and his wife had another
kid. Tommy got another wife. Matt probably got something, but
I'll be damned if I know what. It would be cool to know, though
because I could have completed the little game I had going there.
Here's the dope. Lately David has regrouped, reworked, and we're
reinvigorated. We are thrilled to be part of "Wednesday Nights in
Memphis", a compilation album of Memphis area artists that have performed
at Target House in
Memphis. Our song "Lovely There in Spring will be featured on
the release, due out later this month.
7/8/06
Inspired by
Jason Bell's bootleg video, you can now
find a few classic LD live performance videos on our
audio page alongside our new recordings.
These videos will change as we find more old nuggets and film upcoming
shows.
7/7/06
A message from Scott. Lately David
is dead, long live Lately David.
2/13/06
Two more recordings have been added to the
audio page. Listen to the new music
and post your opinions, ideas, and feelings in the
message
board. Thanks for playing along.
2/10/06
Slow going, but recording work is being done at WH Studios. Three
new songs are completed and will be posted on this site on the
audio
page. You'll find the newest recording already there,
Lovely There in Spring is over there and I invite you to take a listen to
what LD is up to these days.
9/4/05
"Pop Music Played Loudly": the band uses that phrase in our press
materials, and you'll even see it above on the right at the top of this
webpage. But honestly, we didn't really believe the motto was
anything more than a boastful chest thump of a slogan that may or may not
have much basis in the real world. Until now. Last Saturday
night, our
Dingofest appearance on Beale Street, Memphis was abruptly cut
short because folks in the club next door couldn't hear the band playing
because we were drowning them out. I'll say this again, The Rum
Boogie Cafe had us shut us down for playing too loud NEXT DOOR to them.
Turn your band up, James Govan, it's fucking Beale Street! So, I
guess I shouldn't approach the Rum Boogie about booking us. God
knows we'd be too loud if we were actually in the room with them.
Lately David: pop music played loudly. and damn proud of it.
8/11/05
Lately David has been confirmed for the annual Dingofest music festival
that fills Beale Street with original Memphis music every Labor Day
weekend. Come out and enjoy the party all weekend long. Lately
David will play
Handy Hall on Beale Street around
midnight Saturday night.
8/10/05
Jason Bell is much better at providing updated LD news in his blog, and
fortunately, he links those LD related posts to our
message
board, complete with full color action photos. So, there
has been news during the past two months, it just been neglected here.
In a nutshell, it goes Jubilee Jam, recording, rehearsal, more recording.
There ya go. All caught up.
6/10/05
Jackson, Mississippi's Jubilee Jam schedule seems to be finalized now, and
Lately David is scheduled to play the WC Don's stage at 8pm on Saturday,
June 18th. Take a look at the entire event's schedule
here.
6/9/05
LD's All the New Information is mentioned in Jackson Mississippi's
Planet Weekly in an article about "some of the best local CDs".
Read the article that also mentions our
guitar hero Misha Hercules. Thanks for listening, Planet Weekly!
6/8/05
Don't let the lack of updates fool you, Lately David has been busy over
the past two months. Recording continues on songs that will surely
be included on a new release some time in the future. Lately David
will appear at Jackson, Mississippi's
Jubilee Jam music festival. The
festival gets underway on Friday, June 17th and continues all day
Saturday. It is our first time to play the festival, but I
understand it will be a "new look" for the festival, to be held this year
in the Hal & Mal's/WC
Don's Commerce St. area. LD will perform on the WC Don's
stage on Saturday evening, check back for exact time, or just get there
early and enjoy the day of music.
4/11/05
The band convened in WH Studios yesterday to rehearse some newer songs and
to continue the recording process. Find photos in
Jason's photo blog.
4/2/05
Danny spent some time at WH Studios today to work on some recording
and writing. Hope you had a fun April Fool's Day.
3/28/05
On Saturday the 26th Tommy and Danny met up for an
overnight session at Wayne Henry Studios, and as the sun broke the horizon
on Easter morning, Lately David's music arose from the dead and said,
"Peace to you good men. Go forth and rock ass." So it was
said, so shall it be done. Selah.
3/15/05 A
recording session yesterday at Wayne Henry yielded drum parts for a new
song called Peter Pan and the Problem with Girls. It'll probably end
up on a new record sometime.
1/9/05
Earlier this week Scott and Danny met up in Wayne Henry Sound Studios, the
band's rehearsal/recording studio in Hernando, and tracked some drum parts
for a couple of new songs that were recently debuted at our last WC Don's
show down in Jackson. Just yesterday, Danny followed up on this
session by adding guitar parts to one of Scott's recorded drum parts.
12/21/04
Merry Christmas. Jackson, Mississippi, come out to WC Don's Thursday
the 23rd. It'll be a fun show. Dr. Spell is opening. And
ring in the new year with us, we'll be back at Don's on the 31st.
We're playing with a really talented singer songwriter named
Misha
Hercules. He's good stuff. Visit his website and
buy his record, then come out and say Happy New Year.
11/24/04
We are writing and demo-ing new songs for future performances and maybe a
new record sometime. Next show on the books is back at WC Don's on
December 23rd. Maybe we'll learn up some Jingle Bell Rock.
Happy Thanksgiving. Go buy the new U2 record.
10/23/04
October has been a busy month. Thanks to The Hype for funtimes back
on the 9th at W.C. Don's. Scott and his little lady welcomed their
second child into the world on the 15th. If Alexis Faith is as
pretty as her name, then the boys better watch out. Finally, on the
21st, we played at the second annual "Fall on the Square" in Hernando.
It was a special night as Cowboy Eddie Long sat in on pedal steel and
helped us strip our songs to bare bones for a sparse acoustic set under
the stars. Scott's got his hands full with the new baby, so the next
show isn't scheduled until November 20th. We'll be back in Jackson
at W.C. Don's, opening for our friends The Hype.
9/10/04
Check out the new
message board. It's over there in
the Feedback section. Hopefully we'll get some conversations going
in there.
8/26/04
Shows coming up: We're back in Jackson, MS on Saturday, September
4th. We'll play Fenian's about 9pm. The next day, we'll play
in Memphis at Club 152 on Beale St. as a part of Dingofest. It's an
early show, so bring the kids, we play at 5:30pm. We love the Dingos.
And, for you future planners, we'll be back at W.C. Don's in Jackson on
Saturday, October 9th. Yay for calendars.
8/12/04
Jackson, MS-come out to rock with us. LD will play an acoustic set
at BeBop Record Shop on Saturday, August 21. Then check us out later
that very night all plugged in at W.C. Don's. Rock on.
7/22/04
Our performance time at Metalfest has been changed to 5:15pm. Date
and venue remain the same. We must have made the big time, friends,
Lately David is a trivia question! The fine folks at
bekkerrock.com
have created some kind of local music trivia game to give away passes to
Metalfest. Click on the link to bekker's site to get the list of
questions. I hope you win.
7/14/04
Lately David plays the Jackson, TN event Metalfest on Saturday, July 31 at
6pm. We're playing at the VFW, how cool is that. Maybe we'll
stroll up to the bar and tell those Vietnam vet pussies how hard we had it
in WW2. Lately David stormed the beach at Normandy and played a show
in Paris the next night. Now that's WAR, dammit. The VFW, for
god sake. That's worth the drive right there. Ok, not much of
that is true, none of it except for the stuff about the show. Stay
tuned to this page, this event will be webcast live and we'll have links
up right here so you can tune in and watch us tear the roof off the dump
from your very own living room. You can even download some porn
while you watch us rock if your modem is fast enough...God, I just fell in
love with me.
7/9/04
Jackson, TN...LOOK OUT! The D is coming for ya. We were recently
added to the Metalfest lineup and we'll play Saturday 7/31. More
specific details will soon follow. Rumor has it this festival will
be webcast live. I tell ya, we're living in the modern age.
I'm a little scared of this thing...Metalfest, for goodness sake.
Our buddies from The Hype will be there, at least, so if we get stuck in a
dark alley with a big bully death metal band, maybe they'll get our back.
6/17/04 We
play a show Saturday the 19th with
The Hype at
The Highland Cue in Memphis. As the
name suggests, it's on Highland, near Newby's. You know, it's also
near the Fox 13 TV studios. If
Leon Griffin shows up, I'll...well, I
can't think of anything funny...but, it'd be really cool and damn funny.
C'mon Leon, show us some love! Take a look at that link to the
Highland Cue and tell me you're gonna miss out on that! We'll crank
up about 10:30pm.
5/29/04
Next show is down in Oxford Town on June 5th, a Saturday night. Our
first time in Oxford in a long time. It's a joint called The Blue
Marlin. Ole Miss, come out for some fun.
1/18/04
Our next show will happen this Friday night, January 23 about 10 pm at The
Complex on Madison in Memphis, TN. We had a blast last time we
played there, and we certainly look forward to it now. Come on out
and enjoy some good music from LD and The Hype, another band that will be
there. We'll have copies of the record there for sale for a modest
price, and hope you'll feel like picking up a copy for yourself. Be
well.
12/30/03
The album is out and available.
Be-Bop stores in Jackson, MS will have them in no time at all.
They'll be available in stores in Memphis, TN very soon. You'll be
able to link to CDBaby.com and buy the record directly from this site just
as soon as I ship a supply of copies to them, CDBaby.com is a safe and
secure online record store full of good stuff. Until then, just flag
any of the band members down on the street and we'll be happy to set you
up. We are working on some shows near you, so stay tuned here and
come on out, see us play, and pick up the new record, all the new
information.
11/29/03
Now that the record is done, we're working on art work and pictures to
line the album sleeve. Mixed in with all that, and slowing it down,
admittedly, is a new baby in my household, born 10/24/03. Here's
Zadie.
Artist Jason Bell is hard at work trying to please all of us with a album
cover and art work. He is patient and kind. Some new pics on
the
Visual pages, from a couple of shows we've played over the last
month or so.
10/16/03 A
mastering session today at Brad Blackwood's
Euphonic
Masters has finally capped off more than a year of all the
recording, mixing, bleeding, crying and swearing associated with making
our new record. Mastering is just a way of finalizing the whole
record to make things sound pretty. We'll be working on album cover
art and all that jazz in the coming weeks and before you know it, we'll be
trying to sell you a record.
9/4/03
Horn section session today.
Jim Spake and Scott Thompson made the drive down to my
place and inside of two hours, the song KXOK has horn parts, and I got to
chat with Jim about his days playing with Alex Chilton, so ain't that just
the coolest. With this session complete, the never-ending record
we're making is actually drawing to something of a close. Well, I've
surely jinxed it now...
9/2/03 We
had a great time at Dingofest. The folks at
Dingo Inc.
are the coolest. At last year's festival, we played at The Hard Rock
Cafe, and that was all shiny, bright, and cool, but this year at Handy
Hall, we really got the feeling of playing a real Beale St. dive.
The crowd was great and super friendly (translate that to they smiled and
applauded at the appropriate times). Sounds weird, but it happens
less than you think. A big recording session is scheduled for
Thursday the 4th. I've booked Jim Spake and Scott Thompson to play
sax and trumpet on my song KXOK. These guys are real pros, and I'm a
little intimidated that they'll be coming to record their parts in my
living room.
8/12/03
It's back to school time! whatever. As you noticed on the
front page, we're playing Dingofest again this year. We had a good
time at last year's festival when we played the Hard Rock. Great
crowd, awesome vibe. This year, we're playing WC Handy Hall at 3:20
on Sunday, 8/31. A Sunday matinee from LD, you ask? Sure, why
the hell not. Go get some religion, then venture out to Beale and
really get saved...by rock and roll! I miss Sam already.
7/09/03
Okay, I have not been very good with the updates. I'm still a good
person, though. Anybody in Cleveland, MS this summer? Come
hang with us at The Pickled Okra on Saturday the 12th. Dave, Tom,
and Danny all went to DSU back in the day, and we're pretty excited about
getting back to Cleveland. We'll play around 9pm, best I can figure.
4/21/03
Not enough folks dig this whole Earth thing we have going here, the Earth
Day festival at Ole Miss has been cancelled. Too bad, we were
looking forward to playing out on the Grove again. It's been nearly
3 years since our last performance there. This crazy record of ours
is still simmering on low heat, but we've only got a couple of songs left
to do. The light at the end of this long dark tunnel is brightening.
Yep.
4/03/03
So, come by and see us tomorrow night at The Complex, ok? Due to a
scheduling snafu, they've overbooked the joint. The show will start
early and we'll play at 8pm. There's like, five bands playing, so
come out and enjoy the rock and roll music. If you're fond of the
Earth, come celebrate Earth Day with us on the Grove at Ole Miss.
The SEA, (students for environmental awareness??) is hosting a festival
with loads of live music on Friday, April 25th, and we are excited to be a
part of it. It's the day before Oxford's Double Decker Festival, so
come down for us on Friday, stay for Los Lobos on Saturday. Oh, and
the Kudzu Kings will probably be there, too...are they still alive?
3/25/03 A
fun evening of Rock and Roll goodness at the True Music Showcase last
weekend, we had a blast. Look up Leroy Star, are they playing near
you? Go. We got a chance to meet this great band and cool
group of people Saturday night. Remember: our next show is Friday
April 4th at the Complex, come one, come all, but mainly come all.
3/08/03
Our man Scott got married today. Sorry ladies he's off the market,
so Dave and Tommy are now the only eligible bachelors in the band.
They await your correspondence. We will play the 93x True Music
Showcase later this month. Details are forthcoming, stay tuned.
2/10/03
"Talk About You" has debuted at #4 mp3's Mississippi Power Pop Chart.
What, you ask, Mississippi has enough power pop bands for a chart, well,
it seems so. If you haven't heard the song, due to appear on the new
record, give it a spin
here.
2/07/03
New music on our
mp3.com site. "Talk About You"
is a short little number that will appear on the new record that we are so
gingerly birthing. hop over there and give it a listen. We
hope you like it. Our previous release to mp3.com topped the state
rock charts, with your help we can top the pop charts with this one.
Listen+Love+Download. Thanks.
1/23/03
Rehearsing, photo shoots, and more recording since the last entry.
Busy, busy, busy. Rehearsals are going really well with our new
guitarist, Dave. It's almost like he's been here all along, well,
sort of. We're about to get busy booking shows in Memphis, TN and
Oxford, MS. Hope to play in Starkville and Jackson, MS as well, if
you have a fave club,
drop us a line. Plan ahead for
Friday April 4, we're booked to play a new Memphis club called The Complex
on that evening. I know, I know, it's a long way from now, but it's
the best I could get. But you all have early warning and I expect to
see all of your bright and shining faces there.
1/11/03
Scott called me up last night and we scheduled a last minute recording
session for today to record some drum parts for the record. I
typically play along on guitar as Scott performs his drum part while
recording songs, so I strapped on my Les Paul and proceeded to rip out the
output jack as I run out of guitar cable slack by walking too far away
from my amp. We haven't even hit the Record button and I've broken
my guitar. I grab the old back up and we get back to work, recording
a drum part for a song I wrote late last year called "BabyGirl".
Scott then recorded some way cool sound effects/percussion for a song
called "Guinevere". After the recording was done for the day, I
hauled my sorry guitar breaking ass to the guitar shop and got my guitar
fixed. Good news is, I've found a new guitar guy, this job was done
in 10 minutes and cost me 15 bucks. oh yeah.
1/5/03
Hey, it's the future. New years always make me want flying robot
cars or something cool that we see in the movies about future times, maybe
a personal jet pack we could strap on. Dave, the new guitar man, is
settling in. During the Christmas holidays we introduced him to all
of our songs, and his creative guitar style is adding a new dimension to
the music. In record news - record, there's a record, what record? -
I worked on drum samples today, cymbal samples, actually.
Basically that means I whacked a crash cymbal about 20 twenty times and
tried to find the best sounding one. Then I add screwy effects and totally alter the sound so it doesn't really sound like a crash cymbal
anymore. Pretty futuristic, ain't it?
12/24/02
Merry Christmas, good tidings and great fudge! Lately David hopes
you get lots of toys. LD got a new guitar player for Christmas.
LD is rehearsing with a new singer/songwriter/guitarist named David Rice -
hey, now there's actually a "David" in Lately David. Check for David
to be joining us for upcoming shows early in the new year. Happy
Holidays. Rock on.
12/05/02
Our song "Old Miss America" has topped the charts at mp3.com! Thanks
for listening, streaming, or downloading the song. Your listens have
propelled it to the number one position on the Mississippi Rock Song
chart. Thanks! Expect new LD music at mp3.com soon. If
you haven't had a chance to listen to "Old Miss America", a song from our
upcoming album, go check it out at
mp3.com.
11/25/02
Get a preview of the new record! Alright, ok...it's just one new
song, but visit our
mp3.com site and stream or download "Old
Miss America", a brand new song that will appear on the new record we are
feverishly assembling as we speak. As you were.
11/21/02
More recording. Tommy recorded a bass guitar part for "Guinevere"
and I had a ton of fun recording an electric piano part for Tommy's song
"Forever". I've also been working on mixes. So there.
11/08/02
Tommy and I brushed off our vocal chords and got down to work on recording
vocal parts on a couple of songs yesterday and today. Point of
reference: a bathroom makes a nice vocal booth. You'll notice
Tommy's "singing in the shower" vocal quality on his song "Face to Face".
Pass the soap, Tom.
10/31/02
Boo! Happy Halloween. It's the night I get to go to bed early
and avoid all the kids banging on my door. I'm just not a people
person, I guess. Take your kids somewhere else, dammit. I
recorded an organ part today for a song called Talk About You that will be
on the new record. It's kind of somewhere in between that classic
Elvis Costello organ signature that barks and spits its way through a song
and the smooth growl of Stevie Winwood's keyboard sound. Now if only
I were as good as Winwood...geez, I'd settle for being as good as
Costello.
10/30/02
For someone who needs to be working on the record, I sure am spending a
lot of time updating this website. I put up some new pictures in the
Visual section. I guess I got tired of looking at those same old
goofy shots. So, now there are new goofy shots. Hey kids, if
you're within a stone's throw of Starkville, MS call up WMSV and request
some LD. They've played "Measure for Measure" during the Homegrown
program before, let's see to it that they continue playing the song.
What else to share today...songs we're working on for the record: Measure
for Measure, Queen of New York, KXOK, Forever, Guinevere, Face to Face,
Talk About You, Old Miss America. As I mentioned in yesterday's
update, the progress of these range from completed and available to you on
the Measure single to just underway as is the case with KXOK which now has
drums, bass, and a little guitar done with a lot of work left.
10/29/02 In an effort to motivate
myself to freshen up the old website more often, I've bravely titled this
page "Updates". So, in that spirit, here's all the news that's fit
to print. Last Saturday, LD played a showcase/talent search for RA
Records. Who knows what they thought of our audition, but we got to
meet a band called "Dropping Trou". Band name of the year, hands
down. Check out
Six Ways From Sunday a good band and a
handsome group of strapping young fellows. We are deep into the
recording process, hard at work on what will become our new record.
We have songs, song fragments, song ideas, yelps, belches, and squeals on
tape, CD, and computer. It's an exciting time. Um, can you
feel it?
